So I hear this a lot from parents & especially parents to kids on the spectrum. It is extremely frustrating & i know that from my personal experience with my son. As by the time he was diagnosed around 3 y old and 6 Months his diet consisted of only 7 elements chicken, fish fillet, rice, tomato, fries, rice cakes, banana & blue berries hidden in a baked muffin.
Food had to be cooked in a specific way with arabic spices….
So after many attempts trying to disguise some veg with his tomato sauce and him refusing to eat all together. I decided to back off and just put an extra plate next to him without any pressure on him to eat it . Just an extra plate sitting there every meal every day .
so we kept giving him his favorite food while we eat ours, I made sure we had one meal a day all together as a family, where he got to see and smell different food. At snack & dinner time we sat his sister and I, as we would eat our fruits or whatever we had for snacks & I made an extra plate that I would place in the center of the table, not offering it to him. we would also do grocery shopping, as he would help picking up fruits and veggie.
we kept doing that for almost 8 months, and until one day, it was summer time, the memory of that day is so vivid in my mind. I had two plates of watermelon as usual, he had his muffin, all of sudden Bader reached out to the watermelon plate, on the center and pick it up smell it & put it back, I tried to not give his action any attention, although I was so tempted to, but I held my horses. so that was it. The next day he again picked up the plate ,smelled it and took a bite, and another bite until he ate the whole plate .
I was speechless and so thrilled, what a great day it was. I knew that we were on the right path and that Bader food habits are changing slowly but definitely it was a progression .
So we kept the same strategy and over the years Bader started eating more varied food .
Today after nearly four years of the watermelon breakthrough, I am a very proud mom, as my son’s diet is healthy and he eats almost everything, and different cuisines too, as long as the food is savory.
He digs right inn.
